I was 48 in 1998 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My daughter Ariane was 15. As I tried to understand why I had been hit by the disease, I became aware of just how few breast cancer organizations were dedicated to the cause of true breast cancer prevention.

Last year, my wonderful daughter Ariane had her own daughter, Madelyn. And nothing has changed -- nothing -- regarding the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

The good news is that mortality rates for the disease have dropped significantly, although 5,000 women still die each year in Canada due to the disease. If we have learned to treat breast cancer, we still do not understand its causes. One in nine women in Canada will be diagnosed at some point in her life, with almost 500 new cases diagnosed weekly. No headway has been made on preventing breast cancer at all.

I refuse to leave a world where not only my daughter, but now my granddaughter, have to endure what I went through.

For this reason, I am asking you to contribute to the only independent breast cancer organization whose mission is to work to prevent the disease. Breast Cancer Action Quebec has become a genuine leader on issues of breast cancer prevention by highlighting the complex issues surrounding the disease and through basing its approach through popular education and community awareness.

Please help us expand our work for true change with a generous donation today.

We need Breast Cancer Action Quebec more than ever. Too many of us know exactly what breast cancer is. And it is something we never want our daughters and granddaughters to go through.

Best wishes,

Nancy Guberman, Ariane and Madelyn
