Nancy Guberman

Board member of BCAQ

In 1998, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and like many others, I asked myself, “Why me?” There was no history of breast cancer in my family other than a paternal aunt, I led a relatively healthy lifestyle — I ate well, exercised regularly, had never really smoked except perhaps for a year or two when I was in university, drank moderately, had a child, etc. How could this happen to me? In my search for answers, a friend told me about BCAQ (ACSM in French), then led by Sharon Batt. Reading Sharon’s book, Patient No More: The Politics of Breast Cancer, and my involvement with BCAQ (ACSM) brought me many answers and resonated with my need to do something about breast cancer — as it still does.
